DescriptionSauce tureen and cover. Shaped oval foot with tattered shell molding supports a shaped oval body with tattered shell molding on sides and edges. Conforming lid with shell- molded edges rises to curled ends and a low domed peak surmounted by a finial in the form of a leaf and flower bud. Body and lid are transfer printed in black with several different fancy or exotic birds. Interior of body is also transfer printed with a fancy bird. Touches of gilding survive around the finial and on the body.Label TextExamples of this pattern of creamware were excavated from the Governor's Palace site and relate to Lord Botetourt's occupation.
