DescriptionThis large, rectangular needlework rug features a design of ostrich and peacock feathers arranged into two columns, interspersed with flowers on an olive-green background. The main body of the rug is worked entirely in cross stitch, with the feathers worked in shades of blue and pink. The design is repeated twice both vertically and horizontally. The rug is bordered in nine multicolored rows of herringbone stitches. The rug is edged with a light-brown cotton twill tape and backed with a plain-woven, natural-colored linen hemmed in place. This backing is secured 1 ½” from the edge by a line of course running stitches around three sides. Stitches: Cross, herringbone
Construction History
Ca. 1880: Initial construction
March 1982: Wool losses along one edge repaired using a matching herringbone stitch & a tapestry needle
Dec. 1986 - Feb. 1987: Areas of abrasion reworked with matching sitches, hole in center mended, lining reswen around the edges
1997: Linen backing restored, loss of embroidery consolidated with couch stitching, loose threads and weak areas of ground fabric consolidated with overcast stitching, loss of wool overcast, strips of polyester stabilitex pinned and stitched to edges; to repair hole and unraveling threads foundLabel TextThe inspiration for the needlework design of this rug may have been taken from rooms of famous historical women. Abby’s love of art and prominent social place would have made this an especially poignant Christmas gift from her sister, Lucy.ProvenancePrior to 1936, Royal School of Needlework (London, England); 1936 - Dec. 25, 1936, purchased by Lucy Aldrich; Dec. 25, 1936 - 1948, gifted to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller; Unknown-1979, John D.
