Label TextThis print depicts a Quaker standing by an open grave, with clasped hands, eyes turned up. A gravedigger leans on his spade watching him with a puzzled look. The Quaker says "Verily the spirit at length beginneth to me me - Alas! There is no happiness on this side of the grave." A sailor stands opposite asking "Why then youLubber, don't you come on this side?" A second Quaker stands behind the first, hands clasped, looking down. To the left a woman in Quaker bonnet seems to be crying. Another mourner stands to the right behind the sailor. The grave is open and at the foot lies a skull, as if just dug up.ProvenanceBefore 1940, Robert Fridenberg [1860-1946] (New York, NY); 1940-present, purchased by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
