DescriptionChrisom or coverlet, almost-square in shape, part of christening set, (with gown & petticoat) of cream silk satin, trimmed with scalloped, slightly gathered self-fabric ruffle, edged with silk looped fringe with fly fringe clusters at intervals. Lined with silk tabby.Mark(s)Paper tag sewn to edge, written in 18th century hand, reads: "Chrisom date 1763/Belonged to Dr Barnard (?)/Provost of Eton College/ Lent by (Wm?) Cruickshank."ProvenanceBelonged to Dr. Barnard, 1763. Paper tag sewn to matching coverlet/chrisom reads "Chrisom date 1763/ Belonged to Dr Barnard/ Provost of Eton College/ Lent by Wm (?) Cruickshank." The gown must have been worn by Dr. Edward Barnard's son, Edward, who was born in 1763. The child's father, Dr. Edward Barnard, was born in 1717, and married Susanna Haggett of Barbados in 1760. They had one son.
