DescriptiondishLabel TextJohn Dolbeare, the maker of this dish, was one of the later members of a notable pewtering family from the country town of Ashburton in Devonshire. His antecedents from the middle years of the seventeenth century are remembered, in particular, for the survival of considerable flatware, ranging from small saucers to large dishes, that they made for the Edgcumbe family of nearby Cotehele House. Edmund Dolbeare, one of the makers of the Edgcumbe pewter, left Ashburton about 1670 to become Boston's first pewterer. John, the maker of this dish, died about 1761.Inscription(s)Owners' initials "H/RM" stamped on face of rim.Mark(s)Touch mark a rose with a crown above with a palm frond to either side and crossing below with "I DOLBEARE" below, all within a conforming reserve stamped twice on underside of well (Cotterell 1408).
