DescriptionPlate: shallow plate with narrow rim and no foot ring. Blue tin glaze decorated in blue with a 3/4 portrait of George III flanked by "III" over "G" and "R" for George Rex III.Label TextBy the time George III came to the throne the interest in representing monarchs on delft had waned. Two other tin-glazed earthenware plates depicting George III are recorded, and at least one other is unpublished. The portraits are the same as this, but the details are painted in manganese. The portrait of George III by Jeremiah Meyer may have been the design source for the depiction of the king on this plate. The existence of a companion plate depicting Queen Charlotte suggests that these were produced for the royal wedding in 1761. The London attribution is based on the shape of the plate and the subject of the decoration.Inscription(s)The 3/4 portrait of George III flanked by "III" over "G" and "R" for George Rex III.Mark(s)NoneProvenanceDr. Lloyd Hawes, Wellsley Hills, MA1689-1705
