DescriptionTextile panel, originally a curtain, of indigo resist block-printed linen featuring Jesus and the woman at the well as its central figures. The story is from the Bible, John, chapter 4. The motifs include a well with checkered base between Jesus with radiating halo and a woman slightly bowed at the left. Beneath the well are the words Joh: am 4. Other motifs include a standing woman with a basket or vessel in her left hand and her right hand extended; a two-handled vase of flowers; a pot of fruit; and symmetrical flower and leaf sprig with twining stems. Top and bottom are finished with very narrow hems; selvages form the side finish. Along the top are remnants of five tabs originally stitched to the curtain for hanging. Remnants of three checked blue and white linen ties are stitched along one side, possibly for tying curtain together to a matching panel. No lining.ProvenanceFrom the collection of Cora GinsburgMid-18th century
