DescriptionWoman's cap of fine white dotted cotton; the pattern consists of closely set small crosses. Oval crown is gathered to a narrow insertion embroidered in chain stitch with alternate oval and daisy motifs and stitched to a flat shaped band that extends over forehead, ears, and back of neck. Cap fronts and neckline have hemmed edges. An inset panel at the nape of the neck matches the band around the crown. Cotton tie-string. No lining.ProvenanceAccording to tradition, the cap was worn by Catharine Brooke Francesco (1762-1821), wife of Peter Francesco (1760-1831). She was the daughter of Robert and Mary Fauntleroy Brooke of "Brooke Bank" or "Brookesby" (Essex County, Virginia).
