DescriptionSilver-shaped Chinese porcelain plate with wavy rim decorated in opaque enamels with flowers in the European style. The center features clusters of peony and other flowers in rose, yellow, orange, blue, lime, and green enamels, all encircled by a shaped, sepia edged gilt line. Four flower sprays appear on the rim, interspersed with four smaller sprigs of two flowers each. Rim edged in brown. Low foot.Label TextBy the middle of the 18th century, the botanical designs on Chinese porcelain were often more highly European in influence like this example, which was likely owned by Captain John Spotswood and his wife, Sarah “Sallie” Rowzie, at their home, Orange Grove, in Culpepper County.ProvenanceMiss Martha B.D.
