DescriptionSmall rectangular side table without drawer, made entirely of solid straight-grained walnut. Overhanging top with plain edge. The plain skirts are framed into the straight legs which are square at the top and become round and tapering and terminate in pad feet.ProvenanceThis table belonged to the allied Virginia families of Calthorpe, Smith, Nelson, Digges, and Pendleton. Family tradition states that it first belonged to Mrs. Robert (Mary Calthorpe) Smith (born 1733/4) followed by her son Dr. Augustine Smith. Sometime after his death the table came into the possession of Mrs. Lucy Grymes Nelson, widow of Gen. Thomas Nelson, of Yorktown. After her death the table returned to Dr. Augustine Smith's daughter, Mrs. Ralph Wormeley (Lucy Calthorpe Smith) Digges. It then went to Robert Nelson Pendleton, and finally to his son, Rev. William Gibson Pendleton, from whom C. W. acquired the table.
