DescriptionThis is a small counterpane or quilt made of of fine white plain-woven linen embroidered with pale yellow silks through coarser plain-woven linen backing, without any batting. The decorative stitching consists of chain and backstitches, 40 to 48 stitches per inch, forming stripes varying in width from 1/2 inch to 3 1/4 inches. Fillings between the stripes consist of repeating 16-petalled flowers or medallions within circles, grids, interlacing circles, and dots. A separate panel is stitched at right angles across the top, suggesting that the quilt was constructed from fragments of a larger piece. The quilt is trimmed on 3 sides with knotted and woven linen fringe with tassels in 2 corners. Later modern backing is applied as support.ProvenanceEx coll: Tomlinson.
