DescriptionTanged gouge with a tapering octagonal handle, of typical form. Edge ground towards the top (inside of the radius).Label TextWith the cutting edge on the outside, this gouge made precise cuts which mirrored its radius. Nominally an inch a across, it would have been amongst the most useful chisels in an early American woodworker’s tool chest.Mark(s)"P.LAW" with a crown to the right, struck into the iron portion of the blade. Handle marked "R.BOWDEN" several times on the handle (some over earlier marks).1770-1820
