DescriptionThe Cattskill Mountains can be considered one of the first of Kozlowski's highly organized panoramic views. A variety of activities are shown, including a maid milking a cow, the milkman either picking up or delivering milk in his horse-drawn wagon, side-wheeler steamships in the river or lake beyond, women and children strolling in the streets, and horses and other livestock grazing in fields. The trees and shrubs are neatly lined up, nearly identical in size and shape in some areas, and give the whole a very orderly appearance. Kozlowski's fascination with birds is more apparent here than seen previously and some of those flying just above the mountains are reminiscent of his earlier forms. The seagulls on the lake vie in size with the small sailing vessels, indicating the artist's difficulty in establishing correct proportions, a problem Kozlowski never completely resolved.
