The 5 3/4-inch gilded cyma recta frame has a flat liner.Label TextDr. Philip Barraud (1757-1830) was the eldest son of Daniel and Catherine Curle Barraud. He was raised in Norfolk, but moved to Williamsburg by 1782. During his residency in Williamsburg, Barraud occupied a home on Francis Street (now one of the 89 original structures maintained by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation). Dr. Barraud married Ann Blaws Hansford (1760-1836) on July 22, 1783, around the time of his appearance in Williamsburg records. Barraud was active as a member of the William and Mary Board of Visitors in 1791 and served the Public Hospital 1791-1799, at which time he relocated to Norfolk in order to accept the position of superintendent of the Marine Hospital. It was during this time that Barraud and his wife Ann were portrayed by artist William James Hubard in 1830.
The Barrauds represent some of the earliest depictions by Hubard in the Norfolk region; others were painted between 1834 and 36 and again in the 1840s and 1850s. Diary accounts from the 1835-6, record two of the artist's visits to Bremo to paint the subjects' son General John Hartwell Cocke and family.
