Bears the Arms of Lady Hereford (mother of Lord Botetourt, as the widowed Lady Hereford, 1700-1716, prior to her marriage in 1716).Label TextThe engraved arms of Elizabeth, daughter of Walter Norborne of Calne, Wiltshire, within a lozenge indicate her unmarried status. They can be used to date this dish or stand after the death of her first husband Edward Devereux, 8th Viscount Hereford, on August 9, 1700 and before her marriage on February 21, 1716/17 to John Symes Berkeley of Stoke Gifford, Gloucestershire. Her son by her second marriage to Berkeley was Norborne, Baron de Botetourt, who served in Williamsburg as the penultimate royal governor of Virginia between 1768 and his death in the Governor's Palace there on March 15, 1770.Inscription(s)Arms of Devereux impaling those of Norborne within a lozenge and with a viscount's coronet above for Elizabeth (1678-1742), daughter of Walter Norborne of Calne, Wiltshire, and widow of Edward Devereux, 8th Viscount Hereford.
