DescriptionAdjustable back armchair: Oak, rectangular back, open at bottom and slightly rounded at top, stuffed and covered with old, dark brown leather; short, shaped, stuffed and upholstered wings attached at top of back on either side; rectangular arms, stuffed and covered with leather; wrought iron rods attached to rear stiles below wings, fit into ratchet device below arms allowing back to be tilted to several, adjustable postions; square seat, stuffed and upholstered over seat rail; S-shaped arm supports, molded on front edge, continue downward below seat and form S-shaped front legs, molded on front edge and terminating in scrolled feet; rear legs shaped and scrolled in similar manner; three serpentine stretchers with molded upper edges, one each at sides, one medial.Label TextWhile sleeping chairs of the late 17th century often had an integral foot rest, this example may have been used with a separte foot stool. The iron mechanism that connects the back to the arms allows the back to recline at set points, much like a modern beach chair. Likely used by the aged or infirm, earlier examples of sleeping chairs were used by monarchs in Spain, France, and England.Mark(s)None found
