DescriptionThe lower margin reads: "34."Label TextIn 1776, after a brief period in Virginia, John Abbot moved to Georgia where he lived until his death in 1840. During his lifetime, he painted over 5,000 watercolors of natural life, among them, this red bird. Abbot’s style was greatly influenced by his friend George Edwards. Among the books in his library that Abbot regularly consulted were Catesby’s Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, and George Edwards’s Natural History of Uncommon Birds, and Gleanings of Natural History.
