DescriptionTankard: cylindrical mug with slightly spreading foot, the white stoneware body coved with a white "engobe" and decorated with an iron-dipped rim. A single ribbed ear-shaped handle applied to one side at the high shoulder.Label TextThe brown rim on this tankard was created using iron-rich slip or liquid clay. Pieces covered with white engobe like this tankard invariably feature a brown rim. This example is similar to an example recovered archaeoligically at Henry Wetherburn's Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia.ProvenanceIn 1977, purchased from Jellinek & Sampson Antiques (London, England) by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA) where it remains to the present.
