DescriptionUpper right corner reads: "10"Lower margin reads: "Playing the Game at QUADRILLE, from an Original Painting in Vauxhall Gardens."Label TextBased on a painting designed by Hubert Francois Bourguignon Gravelot and painted by the studio of Francis Hayman for the Vauxhall Gardens in London around 1740. This print was advertised in the 1775 catalogue of print seller Sayer & Bennett, though the print was likely in publication much earlier. The scene depicts a group of individuals sitting at a card table playing the card game of quadrille, a game popularized in France. Two servants, a white female and black child serve tea in the left corner. A similar figure of a black child appears as Moll Hackabout's serving tea in William Hogarth's "A Harlot's Progress."ProvenanceBefore 1975, Pottinger-Walters Antiques (Goshen, IN); 1975-present, purchased by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
