DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain, cylindrical cup with flat, inset base. A little more than half of the exterior of the cup is covered with a dark blue ground enriched with a black, triangular band at the base and an elaborate gilt band. The remainder of the exterior of the cup is decorated with a panel denoted by a gilt frame. The panel is painted with a detailed portrait of the Madonna and Child. The rim of the cup has a line of gilding and the interior wall of the cup is completely gilded except for a narrow, dotted band near the rim. The circular, applied handle is completely gilded, and it has a single support that extends from the underside of the handle to the body of the cup.Mark(s)Elaborate mark on base of cup: First a title is given, "Madona and Child," painted with red. Below that is the Prince of Wales's plume with three feathers encircled in a jeweled crown. Below that are two scrolls extending from a central shell shape. Inside the shell the piece is signed by the artist, "H. Chamberlain, pinxt." There is further inscription on either side and below the shell that reads, "Chamberlains Worcester, Porcelain Manufacturers to H.R.H The Prince Regent." All painted in red.ProvenanceEx.
