DescriptionTwo-handled redware pot with twisted handles. Basically green with yellowish spots and variations on the surface, decorated with unusual geometric splashes of red. Edge of lip has short reddish stripes (splashes) running diagonally along it. The neck is decorated with six reddish splashes in "X" shapes. The collar has a band of reddish brown color, consisting of three ridges. There are four large splashes of "C"'s crossing inverted "C"'s around the body of the pot and there is a brownish band around the base. The jar is covered with a clear lead glaze and manganese underglased painted designs.Label TextDavid Mandeville operated a pottery in Orange County, New York, from about 1810 until sometime after 1840 when his shop burned for a third time and he moved to Waverly, Massachusetts. Other bulbous jars with covers and rope-twist handles are attributed to Mandeville, some of which were made as presentation pieces and are inscribed with recipients' names. This is the only known example with slip decoration combining C-scrolls on the body and a repeating "X" motif below the rim.ProvenanceGeorge E. Schoelkopf, New York, N.Y.; gift of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Wiltshire III, Richmond, Virginia.
