DescriptionA scene showing a castle situated on a strip of land in the middle ground, a body of water between it and the viewer. Two men in a boat pole on the water, headed toward a bridge at the right. The foreground is the near shore. The 1 7/8-inch gilded cyma recta frame is a period replacement.Label TextMajor portions of the design appear to have been laid down through the aid of stencils, but numerous fine details were applied freehand. The source of the composition remains unidentified, although the romantic vista is typical of scenes appearing in drawings books of the period and may have been copied from such a publication. The rectangular object at lower right may be a marker or a table tomb.ProvenanceFound in Greenwich, Conn., by Edith Gregor Halpert, Downtown Gallery, New York, NY, and purchased from Halpert by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller.
