DescriptionA hand-colored lithograph with a black border, the image showing a group of Indians with two horses and, in the center foreground, a white man in armor bent over, a female Indian leaning over him with her arms outstretched.Label TextThe lithographic firm of H. Schile occupied several different addresses on Division Street in New York City during the 1870s, producing a variety of works of great appeal to blue collar Americans. Schile evidently copied this particular popular-but- historically-inaccurate composition from another source, as earlier versions of it proliferated from the 1850s onwards.Mark(s)Printed in all caps in the center of the bottom margin is, "SMITH RESCUED BY POCHONTAS." Printed in the lower left corner of the bottom margin is, "H. Schile 10 Division Street. N. Y." Printed in the lower right corner of the bottom margin is, "Entd. accord[in]g to act of Cong[r]e[ss] in the year 1874 by H. Schile in the Office of Librarian of Cong[res]s. at Washington, D. C."ProvenanceBefore 1932, Edith Gregor Halpert [1900-1970] (New York, NY); 1932, purchased by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller [1874-1948] (New York, NY); 1932-present, given to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).Probably 1856-1870
