DescriptionThe lower margin reads: "JUNE./ JUIN./ R. Dighton del./ Printed for & Sold by Carington Bowles,/ N.o 69 in S.t Pauls Church Yard, London./ Published as the Act directs, 531"Label TextThis print, representing the month of June, is part of a set of twelve prints representing the months of the year. Themed sets, such as this were popular throughout the eighteenth-century in England and America. A lovely young woman is shown standing in a garden, her arm resting on a pedestal which is topped with a large urn. Through an open gate guarded by a sphinx on the top a field being harvested is seen. A wagon and many workers are shown. The young lady is dressed in a riding habit with a whip. There is a lawn roller at her feet. Made of either iron or stone with a wrought-iron handle, the roller was used to even gravel walks and lawns in an effort to keep them smooth and well-groomed.ProvenanceBefore 1972, the Old Print Shop (New York, NY); 1972-present, purchased by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
