DescriptionRound plate; wide rim with wavy edge lined in purple, molded in high relief with scrolls, pitted texture, and reserves in the rococo silver manner; the reserves, edged with purple and painted with sprays of European flowers, repeating the central spray in size and full range of colors; two additional small sprays in the center; reverse has sunken base foot.Red anchor period.Label TextThis plate is boldly molded in a shape inspired by silver examples. Each cartouche in its rococo rim is of a different outline and each scroll is unlike any other. The plate is probably like the "Twelve curious desart plates chased, enamelled with flowers," listed in the 1755 catalog. A gold-anchor-marked dish of this shape, perhaps from the same mold, survives, but the "chased" or textured areas have been cut away, leaving openwork.Inscription(s)Anchor painted red within footring (Godden 868)Mark(s)None ProvenanceSotheby & Co.
