DescriptionCruet stand/frame (incomplete). Five drawn molded rings of varying size soldered in cinquefoil arrangement with a secondary ring at either side forming flat frame for holding casters and cruets; plate of conforming outline below joined with frame by four cast double-scroll brackets which continue, forming short legs ending in shell feet; cast cartouche enclosed by scrolls and leaves soldered to frame and plate at front; center post with handle missing.Label TextIn 1961, a farmer tilling a field in Nansemond County, Virginia, unearthed a mangled silver cann. Further examination of the area yielded four salvers as well as fragments of an additional cann, a sauceboat, a cruet stand and glass bottle, and several covers. The silver objects, all engraved with the monogram “JCG” for Josiah and Christian Granberry, were probably hidden from British soldiers during the American Revolution. The salvers were recovered in good condition and the cruet stand was relatively intact. The canns and sauceboat, however, were damaged beyond repair by the plow blade.Inscription(s)Engraved cypher "JCG" with floral embellishment on face of cartouche.Mark(s)Marked in relief on base: 1) sponsor's mark "TW" in block letters within a rounded rectangle [Grimwade 1990 # 3848]; 2) leopard's head crowned; 3) lion passant; and 4) date letter “Q” for 1771-72ProvenanceBelonged to Josiah Granberry of Suffolk in Nansemond County, Virginia.
