DescriptionChest, liquor: plain rectangular top with slightly rounded edges; "tea chest" moulding glued and nailed to front and sides, underneath. Top hinged at back with two original iron butt hinges; screwed. Plain front and sides; dovetailing exposed. Original oval brass keyhole escutcheon in front at top, center; behind its original lock of steel. Compartmented interior with nine 5 1/4" x 5" open compartments at left; at right are eight compartments, 3 1/4" x 3 1/4" and two compartments 1 1/2"x 3 1/4". Applied base with moulded top and simple bracket foot cut-out underneath. Exterior of chest stained in red.Label TextBottle cases, with wooden dividers to keep the bottles organized and separated, kept their contents safely stored under lock and key when not in use. This example was likely originally owned by Peter E. Sanders (1792-1850) and descended in his family at Scotia, Schenectady County, New York.Inscription(s)"P E Sanders" inscribed in pencil on underside of lidProvenanceDescended in the Glen-Sanders family of Scotia, New York. May have originally been owned by Peter E. Sanders I (1792-1850) or Peter E. Sanders II (c.1827-1898). Sold by the PE Sanders II in 1874 he to his sister-in-law, Jane Ten Broeck Sanders. From Jane Sanders the chest went to one of her children, probably Leonard T. B. or Charles P. II; thence to J. Glen and wife Pearl, from whom the estate was acquired in 1963.
