DescriptionCircular plate with a sixteen lobed edge painted with a brown line. In the center is a depressed lobed compartment, in which is a Tenier type painting in overglaze purple of two men drinking and smoking. The lobes of the dish painted with a flower spray and flower sprigs placed asymetrically around the rim.Label TextThe purple monochrome scene in the center of this plate is painted in the style of David Teniers. Various scenes, different but related to it, are found in other Chelsea collections. Monochrome purple decoration is mentioned in the 1755 catalog on various pieces including a tureen, dishes of several types, and many cups and saucers. In most cases the catalog does not indicate the type of decoration, although it states that the tureen is "enamell'd in purple flowers." Most of the decoration on the sets of cups and saucers is described as "purple" while a few are listed as being decorated with "landskip" or "landskip and figures," but without any indication of color. These were probably the polychrome examples. The Chelsea catalog of the following year mentions no purple monochrome decorated wares, but does list a few landscapes, some of which are "green."Mark(s)Red anchor painted on the underside within the foot ring.ProvenanceEx coll: M.G.
