DescriptionLower margin reads: "T. Smith Pin./ W. Elliott Sculp/ 6/ Match’em & Traj in Runing at NEW-MARKET./ Finish'd Horses/ Publish'd Jany 1758 by T. Smith."Label TextThis is the sixth and final print from a series related to horse breeding, training, and racing after paintings by Thomas Smith of Derby. The horses are now ready to race, and several can be seen in this position. This scene represents an actual race that took place at Newmarket in April 1756 between horses named Match'em and Trajan. Ultimately, Match'em was victorious. Some horses and riders are along the sides. In the lower right corner a family is spreading a picnic, and towards the left a little boy chases a dog with a stick held high in his hand.
