DescriptionShaving Basin: Bowl of oval plan with plain smooth rim the edges of which are shaped in cupid’s bow and concave curves with circular holes in the smooth rim at either end, reverse bead, hammed booge.Label TextAn earlier, ca. 1710 example of this form by Hellier Perchard is part of the Yeates Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. Anthony North has commented that it derives from similar French and Spanish examples, sometimes of brass.
Inscription(s)NoneMark(s)Touch mark the bust-length portrait of a man with "THOMAS" and "MUNDAY" in curved reserves above and below within a vertical oval on underside of base (London Touch Plate IV, 978; Cotterell 3329). Secondary mark a label "MADE IN/LONDON" within a curved and outlined reserve with a scrolled lower edge below touch mark on underside of base (Cotterell 3329). Pseudo hallmarks (1) "T?M" with two annulets both above and below within a two-lobed reserve, (2) portrait of a man within a circle with four indentations, (3) leopard's head within an octagon, and (4) seated figure of Britannia within a rounded rectangle, all on underside of base opposite the other marks (Cotterell 3329).
