DescriptionShallow dish with raised foot ring. White tin glaze with pale manganese power ground: in the center, an octagonal reserve with a waterside fortress and a sailboat in blue; on the rim, alternating hexagonal and fan-shaped reserves outlined in blue containing flower sprigs and fleurs-de-lis, respectively; on the base, a 4 in blue. Rim edged in manganese.Label TextA privately owned set of five delft plates with the same scene, ground, and reserves seen here is inscribed with the date 1739. Most powder-ground delft plates with scenes of a castle at the water's edge (like this one) can be distinguished primarily by whether the castle is to the right (see CWF accession 1959-315) or to the left (accession 1950-631).
