DescriptionAppearance: Utility or work table; essentially flat, rectangular top made of three boards; straight skirt on all four sides; baluster turned legs, squared near base to accomodate pair of turned and block-end stretchers; blocked and turned medial stretcher; four turnip-shaped feet.Construction: The three board top is pegged into the turned legs from the top and (possibly later) nailed into the rails with wrought nails. The three boards are joined with pegged 1 ¼” splines placed 3-4” inside of each end rail. The rails are tenoned with single shoulder tenons and double through-pegged into the legs. The turned end-stretchers are tenoned and through-pegged into a squared section of the turned legs and a turned medial stretcher is tenoned and through-pegged into a squared section of the end-stretchers. The turnip-shaped feet are integral with the legs.
The table is entirely of walnut. Paint or wash has been applied to the rails, legs and stretchers at a later date, but does not appear to have been applied to the top.Mark(s)Roman numerals used in construction marked all over table.ProvenanceHistory not know, purchased from dealer in Petersburg, Virginia.
