June 5th 1835."The upper right corner reads, "EXPLANATION/ The oblong square proceeding from the eye at the top represents Adam from whom proceeds/ three lines representing the 3 Children of Adam, Viz. Cain, Abel, & Seth. From Cain the eldest pro/ ceeds Enoch. From Enoch proceeds Irad &c. From Seth the last consequently the youngest, proceeds/ Enos, from Enos Canan &c. The Blue shade extending across the Chart represents the/ Flood which is crossed by 4 lines representing Noah & his three Sons; Japeth, the eldest,/ Shem second & Ham the youngest: shewing that they lived before & after the Flood./ Line representing Children are always of the same colour and proceed from the parent/ which is of a different colour: except the character be one through whom the lineage of Christ/ is traced, in which case it is red, thus 4 of the children of Shem are colored yellow/ Arphaxad who is the 3d in order is red, shewing that through him the lineage of Christ is/ traced. By commensing at Adam and tracing the red lines down will show the lineal descent of/ Joseph, the reputed Father of Christ. By commencing at Nathan 9th Son of David, and tracing the blue/ lines will show the lineal descent of Mary the Mother of Christ, as recorded by St Luke Chap. 5."

Label TextThis is a genealogical and chronological chart that shows the relationships between different families in the Bible, connecting the familial lineages of Adam, Noah, and Jesus Christ. A Virginian named John W. Wood (ca. 1804-1883) created the map in 1835. Wood was a schoolteacher in Leesburg, Loudoun County, Virginia. The local newspaper, the Genius of Liberty, described Wood as an "estimable townsman" who "has constructed a very ingenious Chart." He ran a seminary for boys that taught many subjects, including geography, the use of globes, and the projection of maps. He created this chart as a historical reference and teaching tool that could be used in Sabbath Schools and Bible Classes.
The chart has a very distinctively style, differing greatly from other genealogical or biblical charts of the time.
