DescriptionThe lower margin reads, "From an Original Drawing by Grimm/ Published as the Act directs/ Be not amaz'd Dear MOTHER It is indeed your DAUGHTER ANNE./ Printed for Carington Bowles at his Map & Print Warehouse. No. 69 in St Pauls Church Yard. London."Label TextThis print is a fashion satire that pokes fun at generational differences in fashion. The daughter's huge wig, hat, and clothing of the current style horrifies her mother, who is dressed in the fashion of an earlier era. The daughter is a macaroni-esque figure, particularly with her tall wig. The term "macaroni" described a sub-culture of fashionably dressed men who were frequently criticized and mocked for their flamboyant dress. The print is a companion of another print titled "Welladay! Is this my Son Tom!" (2008-110). The companion print depicts a similar scene of a father being horrified at his son's newer and more flamboyant fashion choices. Other print makers borrowed this motif of intergenerational fashion turmoil.ProvenanceBefore 2024, Iris Apfel (New York, NY) [1921-2024]; 2025 [Millea Bros Ltd, Boonton, NJ, October 15, 2025, Lot 1015]; 2025-present, purchased by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, VA).
