DescriptionCup and saucer: handless teacup or tea bowl and saucer painted with high-temperature colors of blue, yellow, orange, green, and brown. The cup decorated with a peafowl amid sponged foliage; a brown band borders the interior rim of the cup. The saucer painted ensuite with a peafowl amid sponged green foliage with brown branches all within the brown band at the edge.Label TextWhimsically painted with a peafowl amid larger-than-life green spongy foliage, the decoration on this cup and saucer closely matches fragments of teawares recovered archaeologically at the site of the African Baptist Meeting House in Williamsburg, Virginia.ProvenancePurchased by the donors in 2024. In 2025, given to the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (Williamsburg, Virginia) where the cup and saucer remain to the present.
