DescriptionFrench Model 1771 infantry bayonet, with a short, single-step mortise, cut for an under-the-barrel lug and set with a locking ring at the back of the socket.Label TextDistinguished by a rotating locking ring at the rear of the socket, this pattern is one of the earliest to employ this feature. This method of securing the socket bayonet to its musket remained in use in Europe and America until the late 19th century, attesting to the value of its ingenious and reliable design. The engraved “U–S” on the socket denotes Continental Army property.Mark(s)"U - S" is engraved into the socket and an "orb & cross," in relief within a conforming cartouche, is struck into the ricasso of the blade.
