DescriptionPewter communion flagon with a tall, tapering body resting on a moulded, flared foot and ending with a moulded rim. Its partially hooded spout is set opposite a broken scroll handle of "D" section which ends in a hooded ball terminal. The double domed lip is topped by an urn finial and is lifted by a chair-back thumbpiece, cast integrally with the hinge plate.Label TextThomas Danforth Boardman, scion of one of America's most prolific pewter-making families, had been in the business for seventy-seven years when he died in 1877. In the first few decades of the nineteenth century, he became known for his fine church wares, as exemplified by this magnificent communion flagon. It carries Boardman's "BX" mark, signifying his best quality metal and workmanship.Mark(s)Bottom struck with "BX" followed by a three-point flower, incuse.
