DescriptionPair of pewter candlesticks with removable bobeches. Turned stems, each with a low-set large knop, tapering towards a rounded bottom straight-sided socket, and set on a circular base.Label TextStarting out as a pewterer, Roswell Gleason (1799-1887) had a long career in the manufacture of base metal goods, and is credited with helping to bring the process of electroplating to America. Most of his products were meant for use in the home, or as church service. This well-preserved pair of candlesticks could have been used in either setting.Mark(s)Central recess of each base struck with "R.GLEASON" in relief within a rectangle.ca.1740-1760
