DescriptionTop fuller shaped like a typical hammer head of the period, but with a convex working surface on one side. The corners of the heavily-mushroomed striking side are chamfered, and a modern replcement haft is now fitted into its almost round eye.Label TextThese round-faced tools are called “fullers” for the concave shape they impart when struck into hot metal. The bottom piece is set into the hardie hole and the top part is hand-held. Similar pairs are used to create the “fullers” or grooves commonly seen on 18th century sword blades.ProvenanceFrom the Diane and Kenneth Schwarz collection of early American blacksmithing tools.
