DescriptionBrown shading to grey salt glazed tall ovoid jug. Reeded neck with prominent lip and tapered, striated strap handle from lip to shoulder; terminus is smeared into body. Stacking marks on left and right shoulders on either side of handle. Very detailed incised owl on side opposite handle. Body of owl turned to left, head facing forward, gripping incised branch with claws. Cobalt blue decoration fills incised area.Label TextThis is a lovely example of one of the most ubiquitous stoneware forms in the nineteenth century. Although birds often appeared on stoneware, the use of an owl is unusual.
