DescriptionSilver epergne with nine baskets on four cast rococo supports and cast floral festoons hung below the pierced center; central oval basket and branches or arms are detachable, each coded for construction. Four pierced hanging sweetmeat baskets and four fluted solid saucer dishes.Label TextThis example is representative of a group of transitional epergnes from the mid-1770s, in which neoclassical decoration has been added to their basic rococo form. It, like others in the group, has a tall neck, chased with paterae and husk swags on a reeded ground. Cast paterae and husk swags are applied at the rims of the central basket, smaller baskets, and saucers. The paterae, swags, and oval reserves on the bodies of these elements are chased. The oval urn medallions and husk swags of the apron are cast.Inscription(s)Unidentified crest engraved within oval reserve on one side of basket, on underside of rim of each small basket and saucer,and on reverse of one urn medallion of apron.Mark(s)Fully marked on the foot of the central basket, rim of body and detachable arms of the epergne, including the maker's mark and lion passant on underside of each small basket and saucer as well as each small basket handle and on the interior end of arms for baskets and saucers.
