DescriptionSquat pot with globular body, short cylindrical neck, molded pedestal base, and 2 loop handles with coil terminals. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue; geometric and floral banding at shoulder and base; chinoiserie birds, flowering branches, gnarled roots, and the inscription "TG 1696" around the body. Pedestal base is a replacement.Label TextJars of this size and form were certainly intended for storage. It is often assumed that they were used for spices, but other household materials (such as wig powder) also could have been kept in them. Of the few covers that survive, many have two-ring sockets, producing a better fit (see CWF accession 1954-414). This suggests that the contents required a tight-fitting cover for adequate storage.
