DescriptionTureen: cast open scroll handle on lozenge-shaped plate attached to top of loose cover in center; double-domed cover of oval plan with flanged edge and bezel fitting within rim of body; body of oval plan with molding at rim, contracted neck, and hammered convex lower section; body supported on molded foot of oval plan; opposed open scroll swing handles attached at neck to ends of body with lozenge-shaped plate below each at point of handles' contact with body. Uninscribed as to owner.Label TextSilver soup tureens made their appearance in the 1720s, and they immediately assumed an important place in the dinner service. Early pewter tureens are more scarce.
